The Vaccine of the Forest

An ancient medicine — and one of nature's richest sources of bioactive peptides — offered in ceremony as a deep clearing of body and mind.

What is Kambo

The Original Peptide Therapy

"Like a rebirth — a step outside the comfort zone to reveal a new understanding of self."

Kambo comes from the waxy secretion of the giant monkey tree frog (Phyllomedusa bicolor) of the upper Amazon. For thousands of years, indigenous peoples — the Matsés, Katukiná, Yawanawá and others — have called it the vaccine of the forest, using it to cleanse the body, sharpen the senses for the hunt, and lift what they call panema: stagnant, heavy energy.

What the elders sensed, science has begun to map. The secretion is among the most peptide-rich substances ever studied — a complex of bioactive compounds that act on the gut, the vascular system, the nervous system, and the body's own opioid pathways. The work is physical, fast, and over within minutes.

Today people seek Kambo for much the reasons the forest always has: to detoxify, to steady the mind, and to clear the haze of heavy thought. The frog itself is never harmed — gathered gently and returned to the canopy.

The Science

A Pharmacy of Peptides

Kambo's secretion is one of the richest natural sources of bioactive peptides — short chains of amino acids researchers have studied for decades. What follows describes the isolated compounds as they appear in scientific literature; it is not a claim about what any ceremony will do.

Phyllomedusin

Tachykinin

A vasodilator that stimulates secretions in the gut, salivary glands and tear ducts, and acts on the smooth muscle of the digestive tract.

Phyllokinin

Bradykinin

A potent vasodilator studied for producing long-lasting drops in blood pressure and for increasing permeability of the blood–brain barrier.

Phyllocaerulein

Cerulein

Lowers blood pressure and stimulates gastric, biliary and pancreatic secretions; studied for analgesic, sedative, satiety and thermoregulatory effects.

Dermorphin

Opioid peptide

A natural opioid that, in research, is dramatically more potent than morphine as an analgesic, binding selectively at mu-opioid receptors.

Deltorphin

Opioid peptide

Among the most selective natural compounds known for the delta-opioid receptor, studied for its analgesic properties.

Dermaseptin

Antimicrobial

Examined in the laboratory for broad antimicrobial activity against bacteria, yeasts, fungi and protozoa.

Tryptophyllins

Antifungal

A family of peptides researchers have studied for antifungal activity, including against Candida in laboratory work.

Bombesin

Neuropeptide

Active in the central and peripheral nervous systems; studied for its effects on the gut, appetite and digestion.

Adenoregulin

Adenosine-active

A 33–amino-acid peptide that interacts with the body's adenosine receptors — of ongoing interest to neuroscience researchers.

Many of these peptides are small enough to cross the blood–brain barrier — part of why Kambo is felt so quickly and so completely. These describe the compounds themselves, not the outcome of any ceremony.

The Process

What to Expect in Ceremony

Kambo is not psychedelic. You stay fully present throughout — the work is physical, brief, and deeply felt.

Before

Preparation & safety

We talk through your health history and any medications beforehand. Kambo has clear contraindications, and a thorough screening is part of every session — your safety comes first.

The points

Small gates on the skin

A few superficial burns or 'gates' are made on the surface of the skin — only the top layer — and the medicine is applied. Dosage is decided together, with informed consent. They heal within a couple of weeks and fade over time.

The purge

The body lets go

The effect comes on quickly and passes quickly. Purging — through the stomach, sweat, or emotion — is a natural and important part of the release. It is intense, and it is brief.

After

Rest & Integration

Within minutes the wave settles and a sense of lightness and clarity arrives. We close gently, with time to rest, integrate, and return to yourself.

Luke DeStefano

IAKP-Trained Kambo Practitioner

Twenty years of practice in somatic work, ceremonial facilitation, and ancestral lineages — with Kambo at the heart of it. Luke's own healing began on the receiving end of the medicine after a month's long battle with a stubborn internal infection. After just one session, the infection was completely healed. He decided to come back for five more sessions in the same week, and his life was changed forever. He dedicated himself to learning everything he could about Kambo, studying with different masters and eventually trained formally as a practitioner with the International Association of Kambo Practitioners (IAKP). A Rhode Island native, his path has moved between Vietnam, the Himalayas, Thailand, Costa Rica, Guatemala, and southern Mexico, apprenticing with teachers across three traditions.

His work centers on supporting the body's inherent wisdom — what the nervous system already knows, the small physical gestures that tell the truth before the mind catches up, the slow work of putting a person back inside their own skin. Kambo, fast and physical and over within minutes, is one of the most direct tools he knows for that work.

Every session is one-on-one and in person — beginning with a conversation, careful screening, and informed consent.

Questions

Commonly Asked Questions

Is Kambo safe?

With a properly trained practitioner, Kambo is considered very safe. That said, there are real contraindications — including pregnancy, serious heart conditions, recent stroke, severe mental illness, being under 18, and current chemotherapy or radiotherapy. Some conditions call for extra precautions. We screen carefully before every session, which is why an honest health conversation beforehand matters so much.

Is it legal?

Yes. Kambo is legal to use in every country in the world except Australia.

Is Kambo psychedelic?

No. Unlike some other amphibian medicines, Kambo is not hallucinogenic. You may feel dizziness or heat, but you remain fully present the entire time. The experience is physical, not visionary.

Will I purge?

Most likely, yes. Kambo is a strong purgative, and purging is a natural and important part of the process. It can come as vomiting, sweating, emotional release, or other physical responses — and it passes quickly.

What about the marks on the skin?

Small superficial points are made on the top layer of the skin to apply the medicine. They typically heal within two weeks and fade over time, with healing varying by skin tone.

Are the frogs harmed?

No. The medicine is gathered ethically — sourced from the Matsés tribe of Brazil — and the frogs are always handled gently and returned to the jungle unharmed.

I take medication. Can I still receive Kambo?

Possibly — but it depends. Please disclose all medications and supplements ahead of time so we can assess safety together. Never stop a prescribed medication without your doctor's guidance.
